On June 15th two anniversaries will meet: on the Margaret Island Open-air Stage celebrating its 80th birthday this year, Balázs Fülei and the National Philharmonic will play the Piano Concerto No.1 in E minor composed by Ernő Dohnányi 120 years ago; this concert will be the opening event of the three-month long Budapest Summer Festival.

This piece on the programme of the opening concert was composed by Dohnányi in 1898 when he was just 21 years old and he had the opportunity to perform it that year in the Vigadó conducted by János Richter. The concerto was enthusiastically accepted by the audience but it was not the end of the success story of the Piano Concerto in E minor: in 1899 Dohnányi won the composition competition held by the famous Viennese Bösendorfer piano manufacturer company with a one-movement version of the Concerto and received so many invitations afterwards that he could join the narrow circle of concert pianists travelling all over the world.
